The Trinidad School of Indian
Dance was established by the founder, Director and Choreographer,
Rajkumar Krishna Persad, N. K.R., HBM, in 1967. He is
the first person in Trinidad and Tobago to be awarded
a scholarship by the Indian Government, I.C.C. R., to
study Indian Dance in India.
He studied the style of Bharat
Natyam, in Kalakshetra, Madras, under the guidance of
the late Rukmini Devi Arindale. Krishna as he is fondly
referred to has been involved in the promotion of Indian
Dance for the past fifty years with distinction. He
has been teaching after his return from India since
1967 to this present time.
Krishna has traveled, performed
and represented Trinidad and Tobago in many parts of
the world. For example, England, Canada, United States,
Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Singapore and South America
among other countries. He has performed for Royalties
and Head of States.
He is the First Indian Artiste
/ Performer to be awarded a National Award by the first
Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the late Eric
Eustace Williams in 1969.
According to Krishna, Indian Dance is not merely an
art or simply a spontaneous expression of joy and harmony
with nature; it is all these and much more. It is an
expression of the philosophy of the people, the life
and the country. And that is why it is so closely associated
with religious beliefs and practices.
The Trinidad School of Indian Dance
is situated at 41 Jasmine Avenue, Edinburgh Gardens,
Phase 11, and Chaguanas. Telephone number, 868 665-
3505.
