Guyana Baboo Terry Gagraj
Latest rave
“Berbice River”

Don’t let Terry Gagraj’s youthful face and smashing smile be and intimidating and judgmental factor.  In the entertainment arena Terry has been exposed internationally and way beyond recognition.  Terry has performed with   well renounced and legendary singers like Sundar Popo, Ramdai Chatioe and Kanchan

“When I think my name may be fading from the minds of the older generations up comes the smiles and cheers from the younger generation”, states Terry.  As a matter of fact while at a video shoot at Avenue Lounge in Queens Terry was greeted in the street by a 10 year whose face lit up when he saw him.  The humble singer waved to the young fan and later stated, “when the youths of tomorrows generation recognizes you it means you have an impact at all age levels and you must be doing something right”.

On September 15th 2007  Terry Gagraj  launches his new cd “berbice River” along side his band the Bachnal band. The event takes place at Naresa Palace at 116-14 Rockaway Blvd, South Ozone Park, Queens, NY.

Also being featured that night is 2007 Road March King - Anand JO JO Yankaran alongide Bisham - the Riddim Master, female singer and winner of the First Annual West Indian Awards Ms   Sharon Ghanny, Sex Marissa, Bhawanie Singh, DJ Prakz, , H20 Wataflo, Kuli Bai, Apache Waria Featuring SHADIA the Dancing Beauty  Special BONUS by MAHADEO SHIVRAJ and PAUL SANDERS of ***LAFF TILL YUH BUST -- Doors Open 7pm --- Showtime 8pm --- Advance Tickets $15 --- Door $20 --- Special VIP $50 -- Info 646-309-1402 -- 718-725-7570.

Terry’s new song “Guyana Guyana” is soon be the next hit in the clubs and on elitesoundz.com web radio.  He must confess that the song “Guyana Guyana took him the longest to write but when it was done it did its justice.  The lyrics one will agree is all about culture, traditions ones that make the West Indian people who they are today.

For the first time Terry incorporates chutney music with the sweet East Indian rhythms of the dhantal and dholak drums.  Of course don’t forget what Terry’s songs are most noted for and that is food.

This is the year Terry will begin touring outside of his normal venues.  In October he will visit the windy city of Chicago.   So fans watch out this singer is about to make waves. For more info log on to http://www.terrygajraj.com/

Frankie Nanan dies

It is with great sadness, I regret to inform you that Mr. Frankie Nanan of big band Naya Andaz Brass Orchestra / Andaz International - in Cedar Hill Village, Princess Town - has passed away on Friday, November 30, 2007.

I do hope that you have already been contacted but wanted to make certain that all those who knew Frankie, and were involved with the band - Andaz International, had knowledge of his recent passing.

I would ask that you and those who knew Frankie will take a moment to think of him and his family at this time of sadness. As you know, he was a man who welcomed everyone into his life, his home, and his heart. He started his band over 50 years ago... but more importantly, he began a series of events that would affect the lives of those that he touched along the way. Many great artistes and musicians of the past, present and future have passed through his band and home, and we do hope that he is remembered for his kindness and devoted spirit. He was a revolutionary man, an icon in the Trinidadian cultural music scene - who received honors for being an ambassador in this field. He was a most unique individual and one that we will not soon forget.

Frankie is survived by his wife Dolly, sons Stephen & Richard, daughters Asha, Indera, Renuka, Charmain, 10 grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews & nieces.

He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle, and friend to all. The Nanan home is open tomorrow for showing of respect to Frankie... just as his home was always open to everyone who knew him. It is a celebration of his life, and for those who've had the great opportunity to embrace Frankie into their own lives during his time with us.

I hope this e-mail finds its way to you. On behalf of my family and the entire Nanan family, we thank you.

Guyanese-based New Yorker presents
thrilling film on colonial Guyana (Hardbeatnews.com)

NEW YORK - Incredible is the only word that can be used to describe the preview of 'GUIANA 1838,' the Rohit Jagessar film that focuses on the abolition of slavery and the arrival of Indians in the British West Indies during the 19th century.

The vivid cinematography on 'GUIANA 1838'sucks the viewer in immediately and takes one through the journey of indentured laborers arriving on the ship, the Hesperus, and the conflict that initially ensues between the black slaves and the new arriving Indian ones. A scene from 'Guiana 1838'.

Kumar Gaurav, playing Laxman, a laborer brought in from Calcutta aboard the Hesperus, is awesome and the writer's skill at showing the bond that eventually forms between him and the black escaped slaves is brilliant. The unity that is shown on screen should be now used to translate into killing whatever racist insecurities that persist in Guyana today. For that especially, Jagessar must be lauded.

Also featured in the film, shot in Berbice, Guyana and set for release in Australia on August 4th, and later in the U.S., is Urmila, an innocent girl caught up in the system of indentureship, and Cabi, a Maroon, played by Guyanese actor Henry Rodney.

British actors Rufus Graham and Thomas Garvey play the white overseer and driver on the John Gladstone plantations of Vreed - en - Hoope and Vreed - en Stein.

Jagessar, who independently produced the film, skillfully takes the viewer through abolition and as the news of freedom for the slaves in announced, Cabi returns to yell the famous line, "Massa day done!" But it is the response that is left with the reader and keeps ringing in one's ears: "No Cabi, Massa day 'nah done."

Readers can view the three-minute trailer of the film by logging on to http://www.rbcradio.com/guiana1838.htm
